Is it just me or does it seem like everybody is a blogger or influencer nowadays? I don’t have anything against the saturated market since I consider myself to be part of it, but with the increasing use of social media I think it’s important to also have a platform aside from just Instagram. There are some people whose lives depend on Instagram and that’s all they have. I know that I also owe a lot of my opportunities and income to Instagram, but I’ve also come to realize the importance of having a blog and I wanted to share 3 reasons why you should start one if you don’t already have one.
Last summer, there was a glitch on Instagram and I was an affected user among many. For some reason, after I logged into my account with password prompts, my photos from the last 5 months were deleted. If you went to my account, the last photo that would show was dated back to March even though this happened around August. You can imagine that frustration that I experienced. However, in that moment a lightbulb switch turned on for me and that’s when I realized how important it was for me to prioritize my blog. For those who were wondering, I eventually did get all my photos back after 3 days but it was definitely an eye opening experience.
- People don’t realize this, but we don’t own Instagram. It is a platform that we use to showcase our interests and creativity but it’s still an app. After my horrible experience last summer, I realized that the only thing I actually do own is my blog. If you only have Instagram, think about what will happen if you woke up one day and Instagram no longer existed. What other platform can you depend on and call your own? This is the main reason why I think owning a blog is so important.
- Even though Instagram is a great way to showcase your creativity, I think a blog takes it one step further because you can share more including articles, text and photos. At the end of the day, I like to look at my blog as a portfolio or resume or even a diary. It’s refreshing to see all the content over the years and it’s an extended part of who you are. A blog also establishes you with authority and give you credentials based on what you write about.
- People can argue that Instagram does the same as a blog, but I think a blog gives you more opportunities to express yourself, tell your story and create opportunities. I will admit that I don’t have as many readers as I like and Instagram is a stronger platform for me than my blog, but I am more passionate about my blog because this is where I can open up and basically share all my thoughts.
For those who own a blog, I am sure you already know these three reasons, but for those who only have Instagram or don’t update their blogs regularly, I would highly recommend to do so. The importance of having it now will be a great advantage in the long run.

I love being in a community that supports each other 🙂
I 100% agree with you! A blog is something we control and we own so it won’t get deleted without us having power over it. Instagram is definitely a way to get social media out there quickly, but it doesn’t allow the freedom that a blog does. I would be freaking out if my photos were deleted but it does happen more often than not and with all their glitches and updates, who knows what will happen. Additionally, I am sure there is something else that will come out that may be bigger than Instagram in the future, so it is nice to have something we own and can have like our blog! Plus for me, my blog is where I get more personal and share more of my thoughts, life, and advice! xoxo, Christine

I love reading your blog because like you said, it gives me more insight to your life than a photo on Instagram so I’m glad you’re updating it regularly 🙂
Obsessed with this outfit!! I love the dress and duster. I prefer my blog to instagram for the reasons you listed above, you can share and express yourself way more.
I’m so glad you agree!
Mariann you are so right. I do Instagram a lot and try to do my blog frequently. But Instagram you can do so much faster just because there is no text. But I do love doing my blog and I love reading yours.

Thank you Gracie. It’s important to have Instagram be a supplement to your blog.
Such an important message to convey to fellow bloggers! It’s been scary with Instagram’s recent bugs (and algorithm :|), and I 100% agree with you.

I couldn’t agree more with you here, my blog allows me to express myself the way I want to. And no other social media platform can give me that freedom, my blog is my space after all 🙂

Thank you so much Ankita! I’m so glad you found blogging as an outlet to express yourself because I feel the same way!
I totally agree with you! It got so scary for a second there when the algorithm came into play and everyone started freaking out but it really encouraged a lot of us to diversify. I love having a blog as it allows me to write long articles, something that I truly do love! Great blog btw!

As much as I dislike the new algorithm, I do think it forced us to think creativity and find other ways to grow.
I have to say that i really enjoyed that post my darling. The main reason for me, when I started my blog was, besides expressing myself and what I am all about… finding and connecting to people with the same interests as mine. That was the most important thing to me, to not feel like an single individual who is the only one blogging, cause where I come from… blogging is considered an odd thing.
Love ur pictures by the way
Xoxo
Thank you so much for your input Kamen! I’m so glad you blog because you want to express yourself because it’s a great platform to do so!
#1 is so true and important! I miss the old days of the website being the go to but I have a feeling it will all come full circle!

It’s amazing how things change with social media so there’s no telling what’s in store for us.
I think people get way to caught up in being insta-famous. If you are truely wanting a platform, a voice and a space to be creative that can only be done through a blog, like you said, something that is your own.

As you mentioned, intention plays a factor in how successful and authentic you are. I love blogging and I would be doing this even if I wasn’t making money so I’m happy with the thought of that.
So so true dear, we don’t own Instagram and having a blog is an opportunity and creative space to really express your self. You look amazing dear.

Glad you agree Benita!
That’s so true. Even if I wasn’t affected by the “glitch” it opened up my eyes to the fact that many of the photos on there I have there and ONLY there, so nowadays I keep them for backup and a lot of them end up on my blog anyway, and like you said, I own that platform and no one can touch it. As for readers and followers etc… are we ever satisfied? Even if we’d have 1 million unique visitors per week we would probably end up wanting 10 milion… So try to be content with the amazing content (pun intended) you already create continuously!

We humans always want more don’t we haha. But yes, I started to care more about my content and focus on my craft and it’s been less stressful!
Could not agree more! Well said!

Well said! I agree that having a blog and blogging allows us (bloggers) to express ourselves more! We get to hear each other’s stories, experiences, and tips. It is also more intimate where everyone in the blogging community can get to know each other more than just the surface level of Instagram.

Girl #1 is SO true!!! That’s partly why I wanted to start a blog too because I wanted something that was more personal and something I had more control over. I really need to get back into blogging more frequently and spend less time on Instagram haha xo, sharon

Instagram is definitely addicting and I post more on that platform than my blog but I do put more thought into my blog since there’s more writing that goes into the posts.
I 100% agree with point one. Especially now during the trouble content creators have with YouTube, it’s important all content creators have a platform they own because one day Instagram could chuck a MySpace

You are totally right! We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future so having a blog is so important to keep all your content in one place.
I agree! I took a step back from blogging for a quick sec, and realized the importance of it and why I started in the first place

I totally agree with you. I’ve also thought about what if Instagram does disappear one day out of the blue. Then it’s like, oops, right? I’m so glad I also switched over to a self-hosted site too. It’s a great feeling to have my own website that I can show my creativity! You look amazing in this outfit btw!
xo Samantha
Thank you Samantha. Your website is amazing and I’m so glad you keep it updated 🙂
great post, I agree with you, we don’t own instagram for sure so I think the best thing is to have your IG followers visiting your blog 🙂 not easy to do I know…

I totally agree with you babe!! A few months ago I almost close my blog because I though was too much effort to maintain but thankfully I realised the great value it gives and it such a great outlet to express your opinions. LOVE that you wrote this because many people out there don’t know this.
xoxo

I am so glad you kept up with your blog because it’s a great way to look back as it serves almost as a diary.
I couldn’t agree more, having a blog if you’re an influencer is so important. It’s such a great way to generate new traffic and leads too. Some brands will contact me because of an article on my blog they found through search instead of a hashtag on Instagram, which has a shorter expiration date. A blog post will last forever as long as you don’t delete it or it’s on a relevant topic.
xo, Jo
Yes a blog post definitely shows up on search engines especially if you are are writing about a niche topic, so that’s another way to drive traffic as well.
In one room there is probably 5-7 bloggers, we are expanding horizons. I agree, I choose blogging over Instagram. If you want to express more and explore more, blogging is for you.
