3 TIPS ON HOW TO COLORBLOCK

For as long as I could remember, I was always a fan of colors. I’m not sure if that conflicts with me being a New Yorker since we all pretty much wear black here, but I always liked to spice up my outfits by adding a bit of color here and there. I also learned the concept of color blocking when I was interning at fashion PR companies and I always found comfort in wearing colors that aren’t usually pair together, but somehow looks great together.

Whenever I see people wear bright colors or clothing that showcase colorblocking, I admire them because it’s definitely not an easy task to do. I’ve decided to list 3 tips on how to colorblock since spring is right around the corner, which is a great time to start adding more color to your wardrobe if you don’t have any.

  1. Avoid sharp contrasts: Now this might sound confusing because the term colorblocking in itself means colors that oppose each other. But you have to keep in mind to find colors that actually compliment each other rather than colors that clash. I think a great combo is navy blue with orange. Another favorite combo I like is pink and red. You can try to play around with it and see what works, but I would definitely say the rule of thumb is to look at the color wheel and see what’s generally on the opposite end of the spectrum.
  2. Stick with basics, just add color: You don’t necessarily have to explore all of the colors of the rainbow to master colorblocking. I would even consider wearing neutrals with pops of color as a form of colorblocking. If you follow me on Instagram (@mariann_yip) then you know my feed and aesthetic is bright but sometimes I stick with basic colors and my accessories are the items that pop. I think wearing white and beige (great colors for the spring) while adding a bright colored bag (like the one I’m wearing in this post) is a great way to start playing with colors. I received many compliments when I posted this outfit on Instagram and many people were drawn to the bag. So this is a quick and easy tip to get attention especially if you’re in an event because it’s hard to miss a bright colored accessory!
  3. Wear it with confidence and nobody will question you: I always tell myself this whenever I’m doubtful about an outfit or feel anxious at an event. I am always preaching about confidence and honestly, it’s a great masking technique especially if you’re not comfortable at a certain situation or care too much of what others think. If you are owning it and you are rocking a color blocking outfit, then I promise nobody will question you. If anything, they might just want to try it themselves!

Let me know if you’re a fan of colorblocking and if you are interested in exploring this fashion trend since spring is coming up. What is your favorite color combo?
