There is so much beauty to Florence, Italy that photos and words can’t even do it justice. It’s a must visit city especially if you’re in Italy. Florence is the capital city of the Tuscany region. It is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. There is a lot to do and see in Florence, but here’s a comprehensive list of the attractions that are worth visiting!|
THE UFFIZI GALLERY
The Uffizi Gallery is a prominent art museum located adjacent to the Piazza della Signoria in the Historic Centre of Florence in the region of Tuscany, Italy. This was the one attraction that I was looking forward to visiting the most. If you love art and history then this is the museum for you! You can easily spend 2-3 hours roaming around the different rooms and looking at the ancient sculptures and paintings (from the Middle Ages to the Modern period). It can be a little overwhelming since there is so much art to observe and admire. However, my advice is to take your time and to enjoy your visit. I also recommend booking tickets in advance as these do sell out. Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays**
THE PALAZZO VECCHIO
The Palazzo Vecchio is the town hall of Florence, Italy. It overlooks the Piazza della Signoria, which holds a copy of Michelangelo’s David statue, and the gallery of statues in the adjacent Loggia dei Lanzi. It’s definitely interesting to admire the statues front and center. This area is right near the Uffizi Gallery, so you can visit both in one go.
PIAZZA DEL DUOMO
Piazza del Duomo is located in the heart of the historic center of Florence. This square houses the Florence Cathedral with the Cupola del Brunelleschi, the Giotto’s Campanile, the Florence Baptistery, the Loggia del Bigallo, the Opera del Duomo Museum, and the Arcivescovile and Canonici’s palace.
You simply cannot visit Florence without visiting Piazza Del Duomo! You can admire the attractions from the outside or buy tickets and visit each of them separately. This is also a great spot for shopping and dining and will make you feel right at Florence! I also loved watching local artists on the streets, showcasing their talent. It’s a beautiful way to spend an afternoon.
THE GIARDINO BARDINI
The Giardino Bardini is an Italian Renaissance garden of the Villa Bardini in the hilly part of Oltrarno. It does cost 10 euro to enter and it’s worth it if you decide to spend a good hour here or more. The garden itself is huge with different areas of views so make sure you explore all of it! I think visiting the garden will allow you to unwind after a long day of touring Florence’s beautiful Renaissance art. You can also plan to be here during sunset and bask in the fine views of Florence.
THE BASILICA DI SANTA CROCE
The Basilica di Santa Croce is the principal Franciscan church in Florence, Italy. It is also a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church. It is the richest medieval church in Florence and houses Renaissance tombs. Michelangelo is buried in Santa Croce, as are Rossini, Machiavelli, and the Pisan-born Galileo Galilei.
It costs 8 Euros to enter and I would say if you love art and history, then it is worth visiting. However, if you don’t have much interest in that or short on time, then it is okay to also skip this. There is a student discount for tickets so make sure you bring your ID*
SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE
Santa Maria del Fiore, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, is the third largest church in the world (after St. Peter’s in Rome and St. Paul’s in London) and was the largest church in Europe when it was completed in the 15th century.
It’s free to enter but be prepared to wait on a long line. However the line does move pretty quickly and when you enter, you’ll see how fast the church is. Take some time to walk through and admire the beautiful ceiling also known as Filippo Brunelleschi’s dome!
