I visited Budapest and Prague recently and spent three days in each city. I am going to list my highlights from my trip, but separate it into two sections and give a summary of each place.

I started my trip by visiting Budapest, Hungary’s capital, which is a beautiful and easy city to get around. The Hungarians are extremely helpful and friendly and I always like a place more depending on how nice the locals are. The downtown area or city center is where all the action is at. I would highly recommend taking a free day walking tour because I find it to be the best way to get to know a foreign place.

I went at a great time because there were a lot of Christmas markets and you guys know how much I love the holidays. It was a great experience and way to spend the evening because there are amazing food and vendors and shops. I would recommend trying the sausages since that’s what Hungary is known for all thought it wasn’t my favorite. There are also goulash (bread soup bowls) and Kürtőskalács (cylinder shaped bread) which are also very popular and delicious! I highly recommend trying both as they are unique to this country and were my favorite foods to eat.

You also must walk the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, which takes you to Budapest Castle. It’s hard to miss as it’s both a main tourist and local sight. The view from the top is absolutely amazing as it overlooks the city. Try to go during sunset because the sky is the most beautiful at that time. The residential buildings are also gorgeous for pictures because it’s very colorful and bright. The alley ways with cobble stones are a bonus as they make for great backgrounds as well.

Budapest is also known for thermal baths, which are basically hot pools or spas. This was on my list of things to do so I visited the Széchenyi thermal bath which so happened to be an 8 minute walk from my hotel. It was a very unique experience as I submerged myself in 100 degree water in an outdoor pool. There were also indoor pools with ranging temperatures and saunas as well. I couldn’t leave without getting a massage and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made on the trip because it was extremely relaxing and very much needed after walking so much for the past several days. I obviously don’t have pictures because I didn’t bring my camera with me but if you google it, I am sure you’ll know why this was on my bucket list!

Overall, Budapest was a lovely country to visit. Out of all the places I’ve been to, I will admit it isn’t on my top favorites, but I was glad to see part of Eastern Europe as this was my first time here. I always make it a priority to explore different parts of the world. Let me know if you’ve been to Budapest or what your favorite place to visit is.

And now moving on to Prague. Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It was everything I imagined! I definitely enjoyed the architecture and layout of the Prague because it reminded me of what other parts of Europe look like. I loved the colorful buildings, cobble stone streets and narrow alley ways. I usually like to visit places that are different than a normal busy city like NYC so I was appreciative of the different building structures.

I started my full day with a free walking tour because I think it’s the best way to get introduced to a foreign country. I walked around Old Town Square which is probably like the Times Square of NYC. There was a lot of street performers and entertainers, shops, vendors and attractions. Even though the square is pretty small, there is still a to do especially if you want to browse the shops, take pictures and eat.

The most iconic site is probably the Astronomical Clock which also displays a 30 second show at every hour between 9 am- 9pm. My tour guide told us what to expect so I didn’t have any high expectations. But in summary, the top windows on the clock open, there are some movements with the wooden statues and the show ends with the rooster at the top making sounds. It wasn’t anything magical but it was cute and I recommend you watch it since it’s in the center of the square and also hard to miss.

I didn’t mind that the food here was similar to Budapest because I thoroughly enjoyed the goulash and Kürtőskalács. My favorite place to eat was Rrcma which was a local and authentic Czech restaurant. I of course ordered the goulash but it came with potato and bread dumplings which was absolutely delicious! The goulash has also now made it on my list of favorite foods to eat.

DSC_0206

You can’t visit Prague without visiting Prague castle because it’s the biggest castle in the world. I will admit that it’s a nice attraction especially the view from the top as it overlooks the city. I didn’t go into the main parts of the castle, but I still thought it was a gorgeous sight and definitely worth visiting.

Other attractions I would recommend are the Lennon Wall, the Dancing House and Charles Bridge. The Lennon Wall is basically filled with graffiti but the colors are bright and are great for pictures. The Dancing House is a unique building with a slanted structure which is also cool to take pictures of or with. And the Charles Bridge is also iconic and hard not to see since it connects the Prague Castle with the Old Town.

Overall, I enjoyed Prague and thought visiting it together with Budapest was a great idea. Both places are very different from each other which interestingly made a balanced trip. Let me know if you have been to Prague or other parts of Czech Republic!

Wow those are beautiful travel pictures. You guys did a great job capturing them – those food pictures made my mouth watery, haha :). I used to work with a lady who was originally from Budapest and she used to talk about her home city a lot – now I know why! I definitely want to visit these cities soon one day, hopefully next summer.

OOOH!! I LOVE PRAGUE! I was there for some design workshops a few years ago, I stayed for two weeks and didn’t get much of the tourist stuff covered, cause I was so busy hanging out with locals and finding cool bars and stuff. I did go to the zoo and to the botanical gardens and both were beautiful. I will go back some day and share it with my partner and add Budapest to our list too! I think I would go in Spring, it was so pretty then.
