NYFW SEPTEMBER 2018

It has been a crazy past week as I was privileged to experience NYFW for the third time. This season felt different because I attended more events and shows than I did previously and there were new opportunities that I hadn’t received before. I was surprised that I was invited for fittings for some shows because I normally would just have to seek out outfits weeks in advanced for the big events. For some reason, this year I didn’t stress over my outfits. Granted, I did get help since I was provided with options beforehand, but I think I didn’t want to overwhelm myself too much since my goal was to remain calm throughout my NYFW prep.

As always, I love to take a step back and give my two sense on the shows I attended because it’s a great way to see what designers are coming up with and to see if there are any common trends for the spring/summer 2018 season. I didn’t bring my camera with me to the shows as I did my first time around because I really wanted to immerse myself into the experience and be a present attendee. As a result, all of the photos have either been taken from online sources and have been credited accordingly or from my photographer.

• PAMELLA ROLAND: This was the first show I attended and it was a great way to start my fashion week. I never attended her show before so I didn’t know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by Roland’s designs because she had a great range of gorgeous dresses. If I had a fancy event to attend to, I would definitely choose the first look because I think the lavender color is stunning and I love the cape detail as it gives it a more sophisticated appeal in contrast to the glitz and sparkles. The turnout was amazing and I also spotted Olivia Culpo (who is drop dead gorgeous in real life by the way), Nigel Barker and even Aly Raisman. The common theme I noticed were florals, embellishments, and embroidery which make sense since these are appropriate for the spring/ summer season.

• • GALTISCOPIO:Do you guys remember Ray J? We’ll he actually opened up the show and I was shocked for several reasons. Firstly,  I have to admit that I didn’t even recognize him. Secondly, I’ve actually never seen a fashion show start with a performance before, but overall I thought it was a great way to set the vibe for Galtiscopio. The runway featured lots of nighttime dresses with keyhole jewels, cut outs and transparency being the main design aspects. Silk material was also one of the main fabrics of the pieces. Overall, I thought the show had a nice edge and sophistication.
  

   

  

   

 

 

• W REFLEX: I really enjoyed the W Reflex show because the pieces were sporty and athleisure inspired. There were definitely some street styled designs and I loved how comfort and wearable the pieces were. This collection featured modern silhouettes using raw materials like cotton, linen and leather to tell a story inspired by NYC loft culture. This show was also different from the previous shows I attended because it was a little more urban and I love seeing the pieces styled with sneakers. I also saw one of my friend who walked this show so that was very exciting as well!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

• LU YANG: I’m a fan of Lu Yang, so I definitely made sure to attend his show! The collection, inspired by the act of falling in love, was spectacular as expected. He used the color red in many of the designs and all hie pieces featured intricate folds, embroidery, printing, and hanging ribbons, all to emphasize love in its many forms. I especially loved the bow ties on the models and the socks with heels.

• RUNA RAY: I’ve heard great things about Runa Ray so I was excited to see her designs. I was pleasantly in love with almost every single piece because they were absolutely gorgeous and delicate. She had a lot of white florals and her collection was very elegant and beautiful. I also thought the message in the last look was powerful.

• YUNA YANG: I knew the Yuna Yang show would be something different because the invitation said the collection would take place at the Mount Vernon Hotel Garden museum in Upper Eastside. I had a feeling that it would be something magical based on the venue. I loved the whole concept of this show because the models walked down to a live band playing music and there’s nothing more beautiful than that. I also love that the collection was inspired by environmental art installations around the world and some of the highlights included long skirts, floral tops and bombers. All of the models wore sneakers and I actually thought that footwear completed the look.

• • DAN LIU: After attending Dan Liu’s show, I must say he is a designer to watch out for! His show was at full capacity and I was in love with all of his pieces. I actually could also see myself wearing the dresses and had the urge to want to collaborate with his collection afterwards. Even though his pieces were being showcased by models, I felt like his designs could appeal to petite figures like myself. Overall, his show was one of my favorites and I am now keeping him on my radar for next fashion week!

• LEANNE MARSHALL: Hands down, Leanne Marshall’s show was spectacular in terms of production, lighting and execution. Unlike the typical runway show where models walk down, pose and walk back, she had models utilize different sections of the space so we were able to see the pieces a good three to four times before the finale. The colors were absolutely gorgeous and she utilized bright colors, maxi styled dresses and featured models of different shapes and sizes, which I loved!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

• • FASHION PALETTE: I wasn’t familiar with the Fashion Palette but I am always open minded to new shows and designers because I think they’re the ones to watch out for. Essentially, this show featured multiple Australian designers including Ashlee Lauren, Bronx & Banco, Elliatt, Flare Street, Haus of Song, MB The Label, Sabo Luxe and Torannce. My stand out favorites had to be Bronx & Banco and Elliatt since I was familiar with their designs as I wore their pieces for the shows. I thought this show was great because it helped to give exposure to upcoming designers. I never heard of any of these designers before but I’m so glad I did because I honestly believe Australian designers are doing something different and unique. Even on Instagram, I feel like Australian brands are making a great impact on the fashion industry.

• SHERRI HILL: I attended Sherri Hill’s show last year so I knew it was going to be a great show because her dresses are always gorgeous especially if you have a fancy event or special occasion to attend to. Since she is known for dresses, I wanted to see what she would come up with for the SS 2018 collection and the common themes included the color red, long dresses, florals and embellishments. Each piece was stunning by itself but also looked amazing as a collection.
