I’m sure most of you have seen or heard of matcha tea since it’s blown up on Instagram this past year. I was very curious too so I definitely wanted to hop on the bandwagon and try it myself. I drink green tea on a daily basis and I thought it would be the same thing, but with a different name. After some research, matcha tea does have similar benefits to green tea, except even better. I’ve listed five benefits of matcha tea below:
High in antioxidants: Antioxidants are great for our body because they help our immune system, remove toxins within our body and help fight against free radicals and may help to prevent diseases including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Matcha tea actually has 5x the amount of antioxidants than other foods including blueberries, goji berries, dark chocolate, spinach, etc. Personally, I think this is one of the best ingredients and benefits of matcha tea!
Increase metabolism and energy levels: Green tea has been proven to increase metabolism and energy levels and matcha does the same due to the caffeine component. However, the energy that you get from matcha is long lasting and is considered clean energy. I love drinking this first thing in the morning to get my metabolism going and I prefer this over coffee. A cup of matcha tea is also great in the afternoon if you need a pick me up because it won’t make you feel anxious like coffee normally does.
Aids in weight loss: There have been studies that shown that drinking matcha helps increase thermogenesis, which is your body’s rate of burning calories. In a way, it has fat burning features and can eventually help in weight loss if you drink it consistently with a good diet and nutrition.
High in EGCG: You’re probably wondering what the hell is EGCG. In simple terms, it’s basically short for epigallocatechin-3-gallate and is a plant compound that has antioxidants benefits. This is somewhat of a summary of the previous four bullets because this ingredients helps to fight free radicals, improves cognitive function, and aids in weight loss.
Calms the mind and relaxes the body: I think this is pretty obvious for all tea lovers, but one of the most enjoyable part of drinking tea for me is this relaxing sensation I experience in the morning. I love taking my time drinking matcha tea since it’s normally very hot once you brew it. The heat helps me to drink it slowly and really just gets my body relaxed for the day.
I hope these benefits will encourage you to try matcha tea. I will admit that it is an acquired taste. When I first drank it, I didn’t really like the taste but after another cup or two, I got used to the taste. I am going to write another article on introduction to how to drink matcha tea. There are so many recipes that I googled and want to try so I’m really excited to bring more nutrition content on this blog. Stay tuned for these recipes, which should be coming shortly!
