FEELINGS TOWARDS NYFW

As you all know, NYFW just ended and I didn’t really participate in many events or shows due to my travels and hectic schedule. The only show I attended was Leanne Marshall and I definitely enjoyed it, but I also didn’t have FOMO when looking at Instagram on all the other shows that I passed up on. I love fashion week and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to even attend, but after experiencing it for three seasons now, I’ve learned that it’s okay to take a break and not be saying yes to everything.

In a way, I am happy that my travels conflicted with NYFW’s schedule. I know a few other bloggers who also took a break from this year’s fashion week or purposely left the country to not take part in it. This year, I’ve learned the importance of prioritization. Ever since I started blogging, I’ve realized that I have a tendency to say yes to everything, so my schedule was always packed with events and meetings. It’s a great feeling to be busy and I thrive off the hustle, but it’s also important to put yourself first. I used to think taking mental health days off was a phony concept when I held a 9-6 because I always had the mindset of using weekends for that. It is only now that I realize mental health days are extremely important for not only your sanity, but your overall balance and mindset.

Since I work for myself now, I am able to dictate my own schedule and I’ve learned to listen to my body. I do sometimes feel guilty not going to an event just because I wanted to hang out at home, but there’s actually nothing wrong with that. Sure, some can argue that I might be missing out on an event or potential relationship, but there’s always going to be pros and cons of every decision. I read somewhere that when you say no to something, you are saying yes to something else. It honestly comes down to how you look at it and I’ve learned to trust my gut and go with how I feel and want to do, rather than what what I think I should do.

Can any of you guys relate to the struggle of wanting to be in all the action, but also wanting to take a step back and just focus on yourself? And do you have any new thoughts or feelings about NYFW? I would love to hear them!

    • I didn't even know you had a newborn!! That must be your priority so I can understand taking a break from all the madness.

  • Good for you babe! I actually think it was nice that you left NYC and celebrated your friend's bachelorette in Vegas and you just came back from Milan. So good for you to take time for yourself and not be frantic and hectic over NYFW. You have plenty of time and opportunities to go since you live there so that's great you did that! xoxo, Christine

    • Thank you Christine! Every now and then I do feel a bit guilty, but then I realize that it's actually something that I don't regret because am putting myself first

  • That's great you are confident enough to say "no" when it's necessary. I feel like so many people can't resist the opportunity to attend shows for Fashion Week, especially in NYC. It seems like such a big deal and also pretty draining too.

    • I've learned to prioritize and go by how I feel and it's been a great decision. Fashion week can definitely be draining, but also exciting.

  • Our fashion festival over here isn't that exciting, so I won't bother going again. The Sydney fashion week is better but not something I feel the need to fly across the country for either. Maybe it'd be more fun if you lived there and could go home at the end of the day rather than to a hotel. I think I am more interested in travel or even the appointment opportunities to look at the garments in person, rather than the runways which often now feel very dated. New York, I imagine would be a lot more exciting, but I no longer have the same wishes to go to international fashion weeks as I used to!

    • This is so interesting, so thank you so much for sharing your thoughts as I had no idea how it is in Sydney. I definitely know I am in a good position with living in New York in the fact that I can go home after the events, but I think for other people who are traveling and staying at hotels, they are using it more of a vacation. I also agree that I enjoy visiting showrooms more than the fashion shows, but let's see what happens as this industry grows!

  • Oh my gosh I get FOMO all the time but having attended NYFW regularly the past ~7 years, I've realized when I had to miss a season, after a week or two, it doesn't really matter if you missed it! I still try to make it out there every season but if I can't because of other travel obligations, it's not the end of the world. THere's always next season!

    • I'm definitely a homebody too! I like to be able to pick and choose which events to attend so I don't overwhelm myself too much.

  • Hear hear to listening to your gut and doing what you feel is right for you. I used to suffer from FOMO when I was in my early twenties and still working in marketing and PR for a company I wasn't really interested in. It wasn't until I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do with my life professionally that all of that went away. I totally believe in the power of intuition. It will never serve you wrong.

    xo, Jo

    • It definitely comes with growth and experience. I am now so much more comfortable with who I am and what I want.
