FIVE THANKSGIVING TIPS

I can’t believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner and every time I look at my calendar, I am always shocked about how time flies. I love Thanksgiving because I simply love food! There’s something magical about pumpkin pie, family gathering and of course Turkey! It’s the one holiday where diets dont matter and friends and family enjoy themselves over food. I think it’s very easy for us to indulge and over eat and I struggle with portion control at times too, but this year I thought I share five Thanksgiving tips that may help you save some time in the kitchen and not feel so bad the next day.

  1. Do a test run with new recipes: If you love cooking or baking or thinking of bringing a new dish to your next Thanksgiving dinner, definitely do a test run of the recipe beforehand. Be sure to time everything and make sure that you are pleased with the end result. The last thing you would want is to stress yourself over the day before perfecting a recipe that you have yet to try. I would also suggest keeping the recipe simple so you don’t have to worry about too many steps.
  2. Eat on smaller plates: I am sure that you’ve all heard of this tip before but since we are all probably going for seconds or thirds, definitely start out with a smaller plate so you can better control your potions. For some reasons, we like to eat with our eyes and we like to fill our plates so you can easily trick yourself into eating more by simply going for a smaller plate in the beginning.
  3. Fill your plate with vegetables first: I know I sound like a mom, but definitely eat your vegetables at your Thanksgiving dinner! Remember that the pies and mash potatoes aren’t going anywhere and chances are, there will be enough to go around so fill your stomach with nutrients first and then you can treat yourself to the rest.
  4. Schedule family activities: Eating a meal can take 20-30 minutes and since Thanksgiving is a full day feast, be sure to take some breaks and schedule some family activities. Maybe play some board games or watch a movie in between. This will give your stomach a break and this will also allow you to better break up your meals and not overeat.
  5. Save your leftovers: Leftovers are a great thing! Don’t feel the need to have to consume everything on Thanksgiving. I usually have my leftovers 3 days after until the weekend is over. When you think about saving your food, you are more likely to give yourself a break. And if you are visiting someone’s house for Thanksgiving, feel free to express you want to take the food home instead of eating it all in that one day.

I am getting excited for Thanksgiving by simply writing about it. I hope you found these tips helpful and if you are celebrating, please let me know what your favorite dish is!
