How to be Mindful in Your Daily Life

The practice of mindfulness, which is the act of being present in the moment, has many benefits that can affect your physical, mental and emotional health as well as your relationships. It can be hard to practice mindfulness especially since we are in a society with so much technology at our disposal, making it easier to become distracted by all the noise.

The easiest way to probably build up a strong level of mindfulness is through meditation, but another starting method would be to simply making it a conscious effort to incorporate it into your daily life. I know it’s easier said than done and it’s something that I personally need to remind myself to do as well. I will say that 2020 has taught me the power of slow living which goes hand in hand with being mindful. Take a moment now to think about the times that you were 100% present with your environment, surroundings, feelings and emotions. I think it’s safe to guess that there aren’t tons of moments that you can list and the ones that really jump out to you are probably the most precious ones.

We forget that life is short and time is fleeting. I want to encourage you all to practice mindfulness starting today.  The below seven tips are suggestions on how to see more mindful and once you’ve got the hang of it, you can practice mindfulness at any moment of the day and see how it changes the quality of your experiences because I personally have seen a drastic improvement in my overall happiness and satisfaction with where I am in my life and how I choose to spend my time and energy.

7 Easy Ways to Be Mindful in Your Everyday Life

  1. Mindful Waking: The best way to wake up in the morning is to carve out time for yourself. This is how you set the tone for the rest of your day so make sure you set some intentions for the day before you start checking your phone and answering emails. You can also incorporate journaling and meditating as both activities require you to check in with yourself.
  2. Pause throughout the day: Too often we rush from one task to another without really giving ourselves a chance to take a step back. It’s okay to slow down and take life at a manageable pace. When we actually take breaks, we are able to manage our stress and prioritize our tasks better.
  3. Observe your feelings and emotions: Our emotions and feelings have the power to dictate our moods and energy. When you feel a certain emotion, take note of it and observe it but don’t associate yourself with the emotion. Also don’t yourself for having negative feelings. Instead, observe them and honor them and you can then better assess how you want to react to them because remember, you are in control of your emotions.
  4. Mindful Interactions: It’s important to be present in your interactions because this will heavily affect your relationships. When you are spending time with your loved ones, try not to be on your phone and be fully engaged and present.
  5. Mindful Eating: A lot of us eat while we are watching television or doing another activity and this causes you to not really enjoy the food in front of you and might cause you to overeat. Notice your body’s signals when you’re getting full and pay more attention to what’s on your plate. When we bring our full attention to our bodies and the act of eating, we can enjoy the experience more and be more in tune with what nourishes our bodies.
  6. Transformational Chores: We all have chores and errands to do but we can easily incorporate mindfulness to those tasks. Try to be fully engaged with whatever task you have in hand as boring as it might seem. The next time you have to prepare dinner or do the laundry, focus all of your awareness on the task at hand and in the present moment. You can find joy in the little actions instead of dreading or feeling annoyed by them.
  7. Activate your senses: The beauty of letting go into mindfulness is that we can activate our senses to fully embrace the present moment. We forget that we have these natural cues that allows us to hear, see, touch, feel and taste. Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing give your senses your fullest attention because it is in those moments where you can feel alive and become grateful for living.
