HOW TO LAND AN INTERNSHIP/BE A GOOD INTERN

*This is a guest blog post by my intern Loanne Ng

Hello, Loanne here! I started interning with Mariann this summer. Iā€™m so grateful to have the opportunity to intern with such an amazing person, so I was super excited when she asked me to write a blog post for her. Keep reading for advise on how to be a great intern and land an internship!

  1. Ā Get Experience:Ā My first job was scooping gelato and an Italian restaurant. A ten-minute walk from my college freshman dorm, the restaurant was a mediocre dining experience with a red awning and homemade gelato. My job consisted of giving people samples of flavors, cleaning out chunks of dried up ice cream out of the casing (super glam right?), and answering ā€œWhatā€™s the difference between gelato and ice cream?ā€ three times a day. My uniformā€”a white collared shirt and black slacksā€”would have the smell of stale pasta and stains splattered everywhere. My second job was working retail in a shoe store during my sophomore year of college. I would stand on my feet for nine hours, pasting a smile on my face and asking if customers would buy inserts to shoes so I could make my sales goals. Even though I spent my days at the restaurant wondering how this would ever lead me to a job in fashion, it eventually did. My job there led me to my retail job, which led to my study abroad, which led to me studying in New York City, which led to internships and eventually interning with Mariann.
  1. Ā Ā Be willing to do things you donā€™t want to do:Ā At my last internship, balancing eight coffees at once and delivering garment bags across NYC was 80% of my job. Although it sucked, my supervisors noticed how willingly I would do it with a good attitude. They started giving me more meaningful projects and knew that I would go beyond to get things done. Internships are a great way to learn and get experience in the industry, but there will be times itā€™s not all glamorous and amazing and thatā€™s okay. Itā€™s all about the attitude and how willing you are.
  2. Ā Ā Network:Ā Interning with Mariann means I get to attend events that I never would have the opportunity to go to otherwise. I try to take this time to talk to people at the events because you never know who youā€™ll meet. Look at the people you know and see if they might know anyone in the industry. If they donā€™t, tell the people you talk to or meet that youā€™re looking for an internship. You never know who they know–youā€™d be surprised at how small the world is!
  3. Donā€™t Give up!Ā Senior year of high school I went around the mall with my resume to try and get a retail job for the summer. I went to at least eight stores and I never heard back from any of them, with my resume probably at the bottom of the trash before I walked out of the door. This summer I interviewed for seven places before I got one. My father always said that every no is one step closer to a yes, and it couldnā€™t be more true. Donā€™t quit because someone didnā€™t think you were good enough, because you are to someone else.

And thatā€™s it! If you asked me last year, I would have never thought Iā€™d be writing a post for a blogger. I still have so much to learn and Iā€™m so thankful I had the opportunities that Iā€™ve had so far. Getting an internship isnā€™t easy and takes a lot of patience and hardwork; the time and effort you put into your internship will pay off in ways you canā€™t imagine! Donā€™t compare yourself to other people because everyoneā€™s journey is different. Hope I was able to help you guys out!

xx,

Loanne

Wonderful post, Loanne and really great tips on the ins and outs of interning! A lot of what you said here applies to working on your own too as a freelancer, blogger, etc. Building experience, putting yourself out there, and staying humble are still traits I value today as a blogger and self-employed person. Keep up the great work! You’re definitely in good hands with Mariann!

This post by Loanne was so helpful, and it was a great idea to have her write it in her own words šŸ™‚ It is true that every no is a closer step to yes – I’ve been rejected countless times at auditions, but I do get the good jobs sometimes haha. It seems like you two work well together, how awesome! Good luck Loanne!

I can’t think of a single time I’ve worked for anyone where I’ve actually enjoyed doing the job, other than working for myself. You seem to be like a very diligent worker Loanne and I’m sure Mariann values your work ethic šŸ™‚

Great for you, Loanne! I do recognize all the phases you’ve gone through so far, but one thing always leads to another and that’s just how you work yourself up in life. Even seemingly things not related to what you want to achieve are a step on the way of getting there and I’m sure this experience with Mariann will take you a large step closer to where you want to be. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and good luck with what you’re up to! šŸ™‚

Aww this was beautiful! I love that the post was from Loanne’s own perspective. There are certainly great tips in there and yes, never giving up is one of them! It made me a little sad that she had to go through juggling coffees and such. I thought that was a movie thing but I guess it’s a harsh reality. It sucks that for some internships you have to do “bitch” work to “prove yourself” worthy of more work. Hopefully that ends soon! One day I hope to meet Loanne šŸ™‚ having an intern sounds cool – maybe you can do another post on your own perspective, Mariann?

With love, Jenn
