We are experiencing a snowstorm in NYC as I am writing this post, which gave me the brilliant idea of writing a post about indoor places to shoot in the city during the winter. I must admit that it’s still a dilemma I am currently facing because I love shooting outdoors. I don’t have as much new content to post since the weather gods haven’t been too kind lately. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t alternatives and I am here to share five indoor photoshoot locations. I also think this will be helpful for those facing colder weather because I know I’m not the only one with this issue.
Breather: If you haven’t heard of Breather, then I might have just found the solution to all your outdoor weather problems! Breather is an online system where you can book places for whatever your needs are, whether it’s for a photoshoot, a meeting, presentation, etc. You can browse places that meet your requirements and you can book them for the whole day or just an hour. I have used this several times for indoor shoots, video production, flatlay creations, etc. Breather isn’t just in NYC, so if you’re interested, definitely check the website out to see if they are any spaces in your city. I also have a $45 credit for your first booking, which means you can shoot in an inside location for an hour for free! Just use ‘CBPFP2′ as your promo code!
Oculus/ Brookfield Place: The Oculus, also known as Westfield World Trade Center, and Brookfield place are both malls, but don’t be fooled by their names. The interior for both place are great for photos because they are often decorated nicely and according to the seasons. I am sure you’ve seen lots of people take photos at The Oculus on Instagram and if you haven’t, definitely check the location! I actually took pictures The lighting is also amazing and there are bathrooms, so it is easy to change without freezing in the cold.
Subway: Like The Oculus, the subways are a great place to capture photos, especially if you are going for an urban look. The 86st 2nd Avenue Station is usually empty and you can get creative with your photos. I actually took my photos here in my post about the Digital Mastermind. Subways are also a great location for great portrait shots and they are a great background if you want to capture the NYC scenery.
Grand Central Terminal: I have never taken photos at Grand Central Terminal, but it’s definitely on my list. I know it can be crowded and overwhelming since there are so many people, but if you are discipline enough, you can get there extremely early and have the place all to yourself or try to work with your photographer and make the background blurry with just you in the focus.
Cafes/ Restaurants: You have to be a little careful with shooting in cafes or restaurants, but it’s totally possible especially if it’s in a laid back environment. There are some beautiful interiors in cafes and restaurants and as long as you’re not doing a full on photoshoot, it is possible to take a few snaps indoors. If you also go on an off peak time and day, I am sure owners and managers will be okay with it. Definitely ask beforehand and you might be surprise how easy it is to take photos!
For those that are experiencing winter right now, how are you handling the cold while still creating content? Are you just braving it out or are you strategically looking for indoor locations to shoot at? If you’re in NYC, I would love to hear any other indoor places you have in mind!
Great post. If I was in NY I'd def need to know of indoor spots because I wouldn't step foot outside with how cold it's been. (Florida girl here!). I hope to get back to NYC soon & def plan to check out some cool cafes just for the interior haha.
I never was a fan of beanies, but once I started to wear them, I love them because they keep my head and ears warm and they're cute :)
That's funny you just posted this because I was just trying to come up with some indoor possibilities for here in Denver....
