PREPARING FOR NYFW

NYFW is right around the corner and I’ve decided to do a quick post about preparing for the madness because from my personal experience, it can be hectic especially if you don’t go in with a game plan. I love fashion week since it only happens a few times during the year and it’s a great time for people including models, designers, editors and bloggers to come together and celebrate fashion. With the rise of social media and influencers, it has been a different atmosphere over the last few years. I would say it’s definitely easier to receive invites and it’s a great change since I have the opportunity to attend shows and events that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to previously.

My first NYFW experience was actually last September and I didn’t really know what to expect so I went in it without expectations and I’ve learned quite a lot since that. If this is your first fashion week or your 10th, I hope you’ll find these tips helpful. A lot of people are filled with excitement as they get invites to shows (which is expected and natural), but there’s actually a lot of preparation and planning that should take place to minimize the stress. At the end of the day, you want to have fun and enjoy yourself so here are 5 quick tips to make sure you do just that:

  1. Go over your schedule again, and again and again: Since NYFW isn’t taking place at Lincoln Center anymore, shows are overlapping. Be sure you check your schedules and make sure that you are going to the shows that you really want to go to because I can promise you things will overlap and you have to choose. Try not to make that choice last minute, rather plan it in advanced so you know exactly what your schedule is.
  2. Take photos before, after or in between shows: One of the main reasons why a lot of bloggers want to attend NYFW is to experience the event itself but also to photograph their outfits. If you are planning to do a recap of your experience like me, then schedule your photoshoot either before the shows, after the shows or in between shows if you have enough time. You will be running around from one place to the next and the last thing on your mind is to squeeze in a shoot. So again, plan your shoot around your schedule accordingly.
  3. Less is more: It’s very exciting to have a packed schedule and this is all personal preference, but I think less is more when it comes to NYFW. Some people want to attend 20+ shows and have a jammed schedule, running from one show to the next. I, on the other hand, like breaks in between so I can gather myself and actually enjoy my time. This also relates to the photoshoots because I hate rushing my photographers or feel pressured to get my shots within a limited time frame. I would highly recommend to realistically plan out your schedule (again going back to tip #1) and making sure you aren’t overbooking yourself.
  4. Remember to bring essentials: My essentials for NYFW include snacks, water, phone charger/ portable charger, and positive vibes. The last thing you want is for your phone to die during the day, so definitely remember to bring that. I usually like to stay hydrated and snacks are my safety net just in case I get hangry. And of course, bring positive vibes because this should be a fun experience!
  5. Dress to Impress but stay true to who you are: I love seeing what others wear for fashion week because people like to go to the extremes because there is nothing off limits. However, I would advise to stay true to who you are. If you hate wearing heels, then don’t wear them. If you like to dress comfortably and not the typical high fashion outfits, then that’s fine too. The whole point of fashion week is to express your style but I know some people want to dress a certain way because they see other people doing it. It’s great to draw inspiration but I also think it’s important to stay true to who you are while still being able to explore your fashion style.

I am excited for NYFW but I am also a bit anxious. However, I am taking my tips into consideration and planning everything as we speak. Stay tuned for my recap and if you are attending, let me know what shows you are going to and if you have any other tips!

  • I have never been and really wanted to go this year, but we have a big Europe vacation the week after NYFW so I didn't want to be traveling all month. These are great tips for NYFW and if I ever go I definitely will remember these. I would love to go one of these days and will seek you out when I do! Have fun and can't wait to see all your looks. xoxo, Christine

  • Great tips on prepping for NYFW! I especially love your last tip, which is a great style tip overall. It's fun getting dressed up for these events and planning outfits but staying true to yourself is so key. I always consider comfort when putting together an outfit for "dress to impress" events. The last thing I want to be doing at these things is fussing over my outfit. Have fun! Can't wait to see your recap!

    xo, Jo

    • As much as I want to go a little crazy for fashion week, I think it's very important to be comfortable and I had to learn this from my past experience especially if you have a full day of shows and events to attend. I like to enjoy the moment without fussing over too much about my outfit although I do put effort into my selections!

  • I love your outfit! Especially your shoes! Anyway, amen to that "dress to impress but stay true to who you are" tip! I think that tip even applicable for any occasions, because being true to who you are is always important.

    • Thank you! And yes I agree, I think being true to who you are is extremely important in all occasions!

  • These tips are so important, especially for people who are traveling from overseas to attend the shows. I always like to be extra prepared and not overwhelm myself with too much in my schedule. I love this girly / chic outfit, btw! hope you enjoy NYFW!

    • Thank you darling! I am currently taking a break and doing some editing but it's been great!

  • I hope you are loving fashion week Mariann. I always need water and bandaids and things like that in my bag! You never know. I think toward the end of the week I am usually just happy to get to some shows and presentations and prioritise food on the way!!
