I love spending summers in the city, but it’s also common and inevitable to experience rain every now and then. It’s hard to not let the weather affect my mood, but I’ve made an effort to change my reactions to the rain since I have no control of the weather. The best way to make the most out of a rainy day would be to visit museum since you’ll be inside. For all you Instagram lovers, it’s also a great opportunity to get some creative and artistic shots especially of the exhibits themselves or of you admiring a painting. You can also save money on museum tickets in New York when you buy them ahead of time or online, so I’ve linked several websites for you to check out in advanced! Here is the list that I put together of a couple places that you can visit in New York City when the weather gets a bit gloomy.

  • Madame Tussauds:  The Madame Tussauds is a must visit museum in New York City. I love that it is located right near the heart of Times Square, so the location is very convenient for tourists. If you buy the tickets ahead of time online, you can save a couple dollars which adds up for a New York City trip! There are also add ons that you can buy for the museum but I think that the General Admission ticket will be good enough to keep you busy for a couple hours. Madame Tussauds consists of a couple different floors and you always start at the top floor and you work your way down. There are different themes of wax figures on each floor and I love the variety of the figures. The photos always come out so cute at this museum. I highly recommend visiting Madame Tussauds, especially if it is a rainy day in New York City. This place is very lively and getting to see celebrity wax figures, up and close is a fun experience!
  • Museum of Modern Art: I mean are you surprised that this is on the list? MOMA is a very well known museum in the city as I am sure most of you are familiar with the name. This is where the famous “Scream” by Van Vogue is displayed at and also the famous Campbell Soup Artwork pieces by Andy Warhol. I love that the museum has a huge variety of art pieces because I always find something that intrigues me. There is currently a pop up art exhibit at MoMa of Robert Rauschenberg and it is only available until September, so make sure to check it out this summer! As for the pricing for MoMa, adult tickets are $25, but they have a great deal where 16 and under get free admission and full time students with ID are only $14 tickets. If you have not been to MoMa yet, check it out on a rainy New York City day, this place is a must visit for art lovers and also non-art lovers. There is truly something for everyone here.
  • World Trade Center– The World Trade Center is such a pretty place to visit on a rainy or sunny day! The all white interior design makes the space look even bigger than it already is. I love that they also just added a new retail mall inside the World Trade Center so you can also eat and shop if you want to spend a whole day there. When the rainy weather hits, make sure to check the World Trade Center out since this place is enriched with history and beauty!

Let me know if you’ve ever been to any of these three museums. I’ve certainly checked all of them on my list but maybe that’s because I’m a local. I’m always curious to know how other tourists experience the city and if these are on their to do list.

I agree rainy days definitely kill the mood at times, but still if you are indoors I can appreciate the beauty and romance of rainy days. Visiting a museum is such a good idea. I love modern art and would totally go to MOMA. The World Trade Center is so gorgeous inside and I love all the photos I see of it. I’ve been to Madame Tussauds here in CA and it is a fun place to go and take photos with the wax celebrities. xoxo, Christine

I can see how there’s beauty in the rain and I admire it sometimes too but I prefer the sun in the summer!

The past few times I’ve been to NYC, the World Trade Center was being rebuilt and I never got a chance to see the new building, not even the old one. It’s good to know next time I go to the city, I’ll finally be able to see it 🙂

I ashamedly must admit that I didn’t even know there was a Madame Tussaud’s in NYC as I always thought the only one was in London, but I learn something new every day it seems. As for the two other rainy day activity recommendations I cannot even put in words how much I love MoMA as that is my fave place in NYC and I could seriously spend a week there alone. That’s probably due to my love for modern art, but also architecture. That leads me to the next suggestion, WTC. I agree. The one that replaced the Twin Towers (RIP) is a beautiful building and monumental both regarding what it symbolizes (hate will never conquer) as well as the mere aesthetics.
Great guide for rainy days hun1 🙂

Thank you so much Thomas. I know you will be in NYC soon and probably won’t have time to visit any of these suggestions since you’ll be busy, but if you do have some time, definitely check out the WTC or Moma since you love modern art!

The Museum of Modern Art sounds like a lot of fun! I would love to check that out one day if it’s raining when I visit NYC. We haven’t seen much rain in the desert lately but I hope you’re staying dry babe! Have a great weekend 🙂 xo, sharon

I am not a huge fan of going to the museums when it’s nice outside since I like to be outdoors so when it’s raining, it’s such a great way to go to a museum without feeling like I’m missing out on the sun.

You are right about the weather being unpredictable here! Today it’s extremely hot so I actually think it would be a great day to go to the museum to stay inside with the AC and appreciate some art!

Great ideas for rainy activities in the city! MoMa’s great. My favorite museum would have to be the Guggenheim and the Met. I still don’t think I’ve ever been able to check out every nook and cranny of the Met since I’ve been going there as a kid on those yearly school trips! It’s definitely a great place to explore on a rainy day!
