As a native New Yorker, I can’t help, but love being outdoors during the summer and explore the city as much as possible. I can’t believe July is almost over but we still have two more months until summer is officially over, so I wanted to compile a list of NYC summer activities that you can still do. Even though some of these activities can be experienced all year round, I think they are more enjoyable during the warn weather. Let me know how many of these you have checked off!
NYC SUMMER ACTIVITIES:
OUTDOOR MOVIE SCREENINGS: This is truly unique to summer in NYC and something I love doing! You can watch a movie outdoor with your friends or even alone in several parks that participate in these screenings. Mark your calendar and make sure you attend at least one of these screening before summer ends by finding the schedule here.
SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK: I actually have never watched Shakespeare in the Park, but I’ve heard amazing things about the performance. I’ve always been a fan of theatre and I think it would be a cool event to attend with friends and expand your cultural experience!
BOATING IN CENTRAL PARK: I am making this a priority to do before summer ends because it’s honestly such a romantic, fun and peaceful activity! We are so lucky to have Central Park in New York and I want to take advantage of all the amazing opportunities this park has to offer. I would recommend renting a paddleboat, rowboat or kayak during sunset on a weekday to avoid the crowds but I also think you would enjoy it no matter what time and day you go!
TAKE A TRIP TO GOVERNOR’S ISLAND: If you want a fun getaway, you should visit Governor’s Island for a mini escape from the city. It is easily accessible as you just need to take the ferry which set sails every 20 minutes. There are tons of activities to do such as eat and drink, attend event/ exhibits, visit attractions, bike, etc. I promise you won’t be bored here and it’s a great way to spend a summer day!
VISIT CONEY ISLAND: Coney Island is such an iconic summer NYC attraction. I am not a huge fan of the beach but I do think the boardwalk and Luna Park are great to explore! I am a kid at heart and love rides and games so this is the perfect destination to bring my inner child out.
EAT YOUR HEART OUT AT SMORGASBURG: Where are all my foodies at?! Ever since I discovered Smorgasburg six years ago, I have made it part of my summer routine to attend at least once. I love bringing my friends here because we all have a great time by trying out different foods from the vendors and making our stomachs and hearts happy.
ATTEND A ROOFTOP BAR: This is something you can obviously do anytime of the year but it’s special when it’s during the summer because nothing beats enjoying the city sunsets with great company and a drink! I actually wrote a previous blog post on my favorite rooftop bar in the city, which you can read about it here.
EXPLORE HIGH LINE/ HUDSON YARDS: The High Line is one of my favorite places to hang out during the summer because it’s a great way to stroll above the city. For those that don’t know, the High Line used to be a rail track and it has now been transformed to a park that stretches from Chelsea to Hudson Yards. I would recommend combining both attractions in one visit as there’s tons of things to do at Hudson Yards including visiting the vessel!
HAVE AN OUTDOOR PICNIC: This is probably a given and also relates to the other activities mentioned previously but there’s nothing more satisfying that grabbing a group of your friends, bringing some snacks and drinks and laying out on blankets and enjoying the sun. My favorite place to have a picnic is Central Park but you can also do this at Governor’s Island, Hudson River Park, East River Park, etc.
INDULGE ON ICE CREAM: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. I’m saving the best for last because let’s be honest, what is summer without some good ice cream?! I can’t even keep track of how many times I’ve had ice cream since summer started and I won’t be counting how many times I’ll have it before summer ends. Some of my favorite spots for ice cream are Morgenstern’s, Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream, Big Gay Ice Cream, Taiyaki NYC, Soft Swerve and Ample Hills Creamery.
And there you have it! Start penciling in these activities before summer ends because I can guarantee that you’ll regret not being able to experience these once it starts to get cold! What’s your favorite NYC Summer activity??
These are all great ideas for summer. They all sound so romantic and perfect to get out and enjoy the day. I always dream about taking a boat ride in Central Park and yes, love ice cream the most. One of these days I want to visit NY with my family and do some of these things!
Although I don't live in NYC but the UK, I'm still able to enjoy all these things. Like we have the reconstruction of Shakespeare Globe. I would love to have a picnic in our great Greenwich park, once home to King Henry VII (8th). I quite like the sound of boat paddle rides : ) xo
It definitely is! What is summer without ice cream?
Great post! There's always a lot of fun things to do in NYC. I've been there a couple of times and it's so beautiful and big. It's like I could live there and I will never get to know it. I definitely want to visit Coney Island.
Yes girl, you have to come back and we can get avocado toast again :)
I'm loving rooftoping as well, the views are always spectacular! This dainty jewellery is so gorgeous, you look amazing.
