I have always been into wellness ever since I was a teenager and in the last five years, I have prioritized health over everything. I truly believe that health is your wealth and I have made it a priority to not only exercise regularly, but also eat well and create habits that add to a healthy lifestyle. After all that’s exactly what it comes down to, making healthy choices part of your routine and lifestyle, rather than feeling like it’s an obligation.
For the longest time, I struggled with gut health and it was frustrating for me because I felt like I was choosing all the “good” foods and all the “healthy” ingredients, but for some reason, I still experienced bloating, gas and indigestion. I know those aren’t sexy topics to discuss, but these are common issues for a lot of people and it’s time to normalize it. I have tried many diets and program including keto, plant based, vegetarian, pescatarian, whole 30, elimination diet, etc. Throughout those phases, I would feel better, but the results weren’t sustainable, which led me to discover Wellory.
Wellory is a new anti-diet app that values a healthy approach to food by delivering a 1-1 personal nutrition coaching.
We believe everyone deserves a healthy, long term relationship with food. It’s why we’re here. And it’s why we created a science-based, credential-backed app: To help more of us build healthy habits for the long haul.
I was paired up with a Wellorist after answering a questionnaire when I first signed up. All Wellorists are graduates from a leading program in Nutrition, Dietetics, or Integrative Nutrition. They are trained extensively through the Wellory Nutrition Training program, which includes behavioral psychology, science-backed nutrition and motivational interviewing. I had an initial call with Hailey (my amazing Wellorist!) and we kicked it off immediately. I told her what my concerns were and we started the experience by having me upload photos of what I was eating daily. By doing this, I became more aware of the food choices I was making since I can physically see them through the photos.
In addition to the visuals of my plates, I became more in tune with my body and jotted down if I felt any discomfort from the meals I was consuming. For example, if I was experiencing bloating or indigestion, Hailey and I would try to notice patterns of certain ingredients including timing and food combination. I am happy to say that aside from my food allergies, I was able to pinpoint that my body does not tolerate well to fructans, which are part of FODMAPS.
FODMAP is:
Fructose: simple sugar found in many fruits and vegetables that also makes up the structure of table sugar and most added sugars.
Lactose: carbohydrate found in dairy products like milk.
Fructans: Found in many foods, including grains like wheat, spelt, rye and barley.
Galactans: Found in large amounts in legumes.
Polyols: Sugar alcohols like xylitol, sorbitol, maltitol and mannitol. They are found in some fruits and vegetables and often used as sweeteners.
I noticed my body does not digest lentils, onions or cabbage well and those foods are from the Oligosaccharides (fructans and/or galactans) group. Those foods aren’t technically bad but I was consuming this on a weekly basis. Once I started to remove these ingredients, I haven’t felt any discomfort!
This might sound like a simple observation, but I want to reiterate the health benefits from removing these foods from my diet. Not only was I able to live my life without frustration, but I felt accomplished and relieved that I was able to receive all the answers and triggers that I have been looking for. The best part about the app is that I developed a great relationship with my Wellorist. We would have daily check ins and I was able to message her any questions I had. I felt like Hailey was a trusted friend and I felt like she was invested in my health journey as much as I was.
The app was also very easy to use and I didn’t feel like it was intruding on my regular life. Another key benefit was that I developed a healthy relationship with food which is a primary intention of the app. I have a great balance of eating well but also enjoying myself on social occasions. Since I am better equipped at choosing foods that agree with my body, I have learned to take that lesson to choosing the right meals when eating at restaurants.
Since using the app for five months, I can confidently say I am a huge fan and would highly recommend anybody who is looking to improve their relationship or knowledge with food to try it out. My overall experience was positive and I didn’t rush the process. I was patient with each phase of building a habit and I am in a better headspace when it comes to food now than I was back in February. Investing in your health is an investment in yourself and that’s something that is priceless and invaluable!

Gosh, we were just talking about this concept how one food can be "good" yet it may not be good for you. What a fabulous app.

Definitely!!! We have a great team of Wellorists who are eager and ready to figure out what works for YOU 🧡
Yes I agree 100%! All of us are different, so it's important to find what foods work/ agree with your body and what doesn't.
Wow this app sounds super useful. A bit pricy but if you use it sounds like it is worth it. And I have the same problem with the same foods.

This looks like a brilliant idea for a nutrition app and love the idea that you have direct contact with a coach.
