As many of you know, I was born and raised in NYC. I have been blessed to live in the Lower East Side, which I think is one of the best neighborhoods in Manhattan. I created my blog with my upbringing as an identity, hence the name MARIANNYC. I am very proud to be from this state mainly because I know so many people would dream to live here. There’s actually a lot of people that I know that have moved here to live here and it’s a bit rare to meet people who are actually native New Yorkers. I think there are misconceptions that New Yorkers are rude, so I wanted to write about what it’s like to live in NYC and the lessons I’ve learned over the years.

1. New Yorkers are driven: I would consider myself a very motivated and driven person and I think it definitely has to do with the city and its open doors for endless possibilities. I was never the one to wait for something to happen. I never got anything handed to me on a silver platter, so I always went out of my way to get what I want. This is one of the best things I love about NYC. I think you are bound to feed off the hustle, which is why so many people come here to pursue their dreams.
2.
We are always on the go: This relates to the first point of being driven, but I feel like you can identify New Yorkers by their walking speed. I am always on the go because the city never sleeps! There is so much going on every hour of the day and I think that’s why we always seem like we are in a rush. When I am hanging out with friends who aren’t from the city, they always tell me that I am walking extremely fast and sometimes I don’t even realize it. We also don’t drive here, so in order for us to get to our destinations, we need to walk or take the subway which is what attributes to our constant on the go mindset.
3.
We have tough skin: I don’t think New Yorkers are necessarily rude, but I think we have thick skin. There are a lot of crazy things that happen in the city and I think I have seen it all so I know how to react to it. I don’t take anything personally especially if people are pushing me at the subway or bump into my in the streets. I just shrug it off because I know that’s part of the city life.
4.
We don’t dislike tourists, we just dislike people who block the streets: You can ask any New Yorker about this fact and I can guarantee that they will agree. Yes, it’s a little hypocritical because I love traveling and being a tourist in other countries, but it really irritates me when people stop on the streets to take pictures. Although I am used to this and have tried to change my attitude, I think it disrupts the movement of the city since so many people are on the go. A lot of people also associate New York with Times Square, but I actually try to avoid that place as much as possible because there’s just too many people in my way.
5.
Anything is possible in NYC:
Yes, this might sound cliche, but I truly believe that’s the essence and vibe of the city. You hear so many stories about how people went from nothing to making it big in NYC. This ties in with some of my previous points and I love that I never feel defeated living here. Yes, it an be overwhelming but I thrive off the energy of the city. It has made me more productive and proactive and I owe my motivation to NYC.

I would love to hear what you think about NYC. If you are a Native New Yorker, do you agree with my points? And what do you love about your city/ country?

It makes me giggle how one of your points was that you don’t like people who stop in the street for photos but hehehe these photos totally make it look like you’re doing just that. Still a really cool read. My dad grew up in New York but I’ve only been twice and it was only for a few hours each time passing through on family vacations. I’m hoping to get a few days up there soon!

I took these pictures on the side when it was a red light at the traffic sign. I’m talking about in the middle of the actual streets lol. Sorry if that’s wasn’t clear but I am mainly referring to busy areas like midtown.

I always associate New York with drive for success. People who always working hard, on the go, in a hurry, and I absolutely love it.

Your dress is super cute and love those shoes! And this post made me laugh! Every point was spot on! Especially the tourist one hahahaha. I’m sure NY is one of the main reasons why people hate Americans since they think we’re rude.. we’re just always busy and on the go 😛

With love,

Haha, I’m glad you can relate. I didn’t want this post to come off rude but I wanted to explain why New Yorkers have that attitude. It’s nothing personal and all about our drive.

NYC is an amazing place to be. I just don’t think it may not be for everybody because it can get a little chaotic and overwhelming. But I do think there are ways to get by it once you adapt.

This is all so very true about New Yorkers! I avoid Midtown Manhattan like the plague. There’s just too many people and I do get very irritated if I’m going no faster than a snail getting from point A to point B.

I can see where you’re coming from about the chaotic and constant movement of the city and trust me, sometimes it gets to me too! I do enjoy the area that I live in which is a bit more peaceful so I love that there are still neighborhoods that aren’t as hectic as the center of NYC.

I’m not a native New Yorker, not even close, but I lived Upstate NY for a few years and must say that New York is not that different from my home town Stockholm as everyone is driven, speedy as heck, get irritated when people (tourists or people out of town) stop in the middle of the streets and block their pace and that most things are possible here. What is the difference though is that Stockholm does sleep, whereas wonderful and incredible NYC never does. That’s what I love about that city. There’s always something going on and I plan on spending a few years there sometime soon! 🙂
Thanks for the insights from a real New Yorker!

I’ve never been to Stockholm, but it’s definitely on my list. I also appreciate other countries that are more peaceful. I think it’s great to be in NYC when you are young and driven but I do like the idea of getting away when I am older and more settled in.

Thanks for clearing up the rudeness! I got into multiple altercations when people when I was there because people didn’t say “excuse me” when they bumped into me. That’s a huge pet peeve of mine lol and also when people look at me and don’t speak! I don’t know, maybe that’s just a Southern thing and I’m just crazy…but I will try to be less picky next time I go. It’s great to hear these things from a native 🙂

Haha, yes please don’t take anything personally. I think we are all in our own heads and don’t mean to be rude. It’s just that we’re always on the go and the hustle is real!

hahaha number 4 is just so funny! I’ll probably be that tourist blocking the ways haha! i have never been to NYC but ti’s definitely on my list. I envision it as this giant city where all dreams can come true if you work very hard. I live in Montreal and love my city very much: the mix of cultures, the beautiful scenery, the streets in the old port. It’s also a bliss in summer!
