Let’s face it, we all want to grow on Instagram whether we want to admit it or not. I used to be a little obsessed with my numbers and would overwhelm myself if I wasn’t getting a certain number of likes or if my following would reach a plateau. Through my few years of blogging, I have learned to focus more on my brand rather than the numbers. And with Instagram’s new algorithm, it is evident more than ever that it is extremely difficult to grow. I can proudly say that I’ve changed my mindset and my numbers don’t affect me mentally as much as it did a year ago. I am satisfied with my following and I can now pour my passion into my content and focus on my goal as a brand.
I wanted to list 3 reasons why you are not growing on Instagram and hopefully these can help you change the way you look at this social media platform. Some of these reasons are definitely ones that hindered my growth and I think we are all guilty of doing at least one of the below actions.
- Your feed is full of sponsored posts: Kudos to you for landing sponsored posts because not many bloggers can! I say this with the most respect because it means that a brand sees your potential and worth and ultimately wants to work with you on a paid campaign or project. However, your whole feed should not consist of sponsored posts because at the end of the day, you are basically a walking advertisement. I also find that those who do a lot of advertisements lost authenticity because it seems like they are just saying yes to every opportunity. Do a self assessment and take a look at your feed and ask yourself if the sponsored posts are helping you reach your ultimate goal. I like to limit my sponsored posts to maybe 2-3 maximum a month. I now focus on long term partnerships with the same brands rather than one off projects with multiple. I understand that money talks but you have to also weight the long term results compared to the short term compensation.
- You are not engaging with your followers: If you are only posting content and not engaging with others, then you will not grow. Some people are consumed with their follower to following ratio but I think if you truly like someone’s feed, then it’s okay to follow them. The whole point of the platform is to be active and engage because the more you give, the more you receive back. I’ve noticed a huge growth in my engagement when I leave genuine comments to others and reply back to their comments or even stories. It’s definitely time consuming, but when you are actually doing it because you want to, it takes the stress out of feeling like a chore.
- Your content is average: Within the last few years, I’ve seen content increase in creativity and quality and I am always amazed by what people create. In order to stay in this business, you need to be doing something different. As much as I think candid shots are great, I also do think the more creative ones do better on Instagram. I used to do a photoshoot here and there and just post the photos, but now I am really thinking more in my content creation from the photoshoot location, to my outfits, to the colors/ theme, etc. I think once you start putting more effort into your Instagram and look at it as a reflection of your brand, it will translate more and people can see the work behind it.
I hope that this post will help you do some self assessment on your Instagram and perhaps you can see a change in your growth if you change some of the habits. Let me know your thoughts and if you have any tips on how to grow on Instagram!

You get results based on the work you put in so the more you engaged, the better your account becomes.
Wonderful tipps and amazing look! I love the turquoise with the gold!!

Yes it is!
Firstly that skirt and bag are amazing! Agreed it’s hard not to care but I’ve also started putting more effort into the composition of my shoots and it’s actually been more fun and rewarding for me, regardless of numbers.
I think it’s important to put effort into your content but I think it’s also a good reminder to not get too caught up with the numbers.
Interesting post…Thanks for sharing

Thanks Sharon! Glad you found them helpful.
This is extremely true and helpful. I too get caught up in the numbers but have also taken a step back and stopped saying yes to a lot of things. I even buy my own clothes because I want my brand to reflect me, but just free clothes I can get. I definitely think it is important to be on top of your game by creating the best content possible, but at the same time remember why you started and don’t get too mixed up in the competition of it all. It IS a saturated market so do what you love and enjoy it! xoxo, Christine

Thank you honey!
Such great tips! Thanks for sharing with us, and I couldn’t agree with you more. One more thing is that many girls I know, focus on “why the heck did she (any “she”) grows so much”, instead of focusing on how to grow their profile and aesthetics. Excellent post!

Thank you Amy and yes Instagram’s algorithm will forever remain a mystery.
Very great feedback on Instagram account growth! After talking to many marketing managers, most of us prefer no more than 10% sponsored posts when hiring a blogger 🙂
https://www.bunnybernice.com/single-post/2017/10/18/The-Ultimate-Christmas-Stocking-Fillers-for-Her
So glad to hear that marketing managers feel the same!
It most definitely is a fine and thin line to walk on with sponsored posts and I for one am sometimes wondering if I did the right thing when I said yes to something (or neglected another sponsor), but reassured by your words I think I just need to stay true to myself and show what my life is like without me holding a cup of coffee and saying it makes me slimmer, thinner and happier… haha. Whereas Instagram is purely a business platform for me, it also needs to be authentic, just as you pointed out.

I think it is also sometimes clear when we are being authentic or not. It always comes back to our gut feeling!

This is so true babe!!! I struggle getting my numbers up and every 3 days my numbers are getting down so its a shame!! I also believe giveaways is something you should definitely avoid. BTW love this gold skirt!

Marcy
Thank you Marcy! You just have to focus on your brand and don’t compare yourself to others especially in terms of numbers.
Great points! I think I struggle a lot with “average content” and I’m trying to improve on that. I agree that engagement is vital to the relationship with the Instagram community. Great read!

The more effort you put into your content, the better the results! I try to treat each post as a project so it allows me to be more cautious about quality over quantity.
Really great tips on growing on Instagram! I love it when brands respond to or like my comments. It definitely leaves a lasting impression and make me want to follow them more. Because of this I try to do the same with my followers. There’s nothing like that personable touch.
xo, Jo
You are totally right! I also feel great when brands follow me and comment on my photos because if you want to work with them, they should be up to date with what you’re doing and support you.
Yes, all great tips babe. This outfit is so chic, love how you paired the floral blouse with the gold skirt.
